Attack will be seen in messianic terms

I published this post Friday morning, and its now Sunday night - strange the tone and style of the responses I’ve been getting to this piece [all the comments were emailed to my Jpost account as the piece was posted on the Jpost website]. Religious people say I’m totally off the mark and that the Mercaz Harav attack was aimed squarely at Jews and not specifically at the religious Zionist sector - some religious Zionist people I really respect made this point very eloquently. Some secular people have told me I’m totally spot - on and that this attack was carried out against that particular institution in the hope that it would fan the flames of religious war and provoke the national religious sector into angry retaliation, which would send this country into a tailspin. Most of the emails I got from the religious readers were angry in tone, some even accused me of being a “Jew hater” and worse. What’s clear is that this attack is unusual in its brutality and will have serious consequences for the Israeli population as a whole.

Anyway, please judge for yourself:

While defense establishment officials sitting in the Kiriya military headquarters in Tel-Aviv ponder the diplomatic-security implications of last night’s attack, a totally different analysis will be taking place this weekend around Shabbat dinner tables across Jerusalem and most West Bank settlements.

The people directly affected by the deadly terrorist attack on the Merkaz Harav Yeshiva are not just the students, their relatives and friends, but the much wider larger segment of the religious Zionist public. This segment of the population, already seething with anger, which started with the Disengagement in 2005, the Amona pullout, the government promises to America remove illegal outposts, the continued diplomatic process launched at Annapolis and its emphasis to talk about all topics, including Jerusalem, is going to be extremely unhappy about this attack. Together with the grief and sorrow, there is going to be a lot of angry talk about good and evil, about a religious war over the Holy Land.

This attack was aimed specifically for the religious Zionist and settler population, and the terrorists knew that by speaking in this language, to these people, their message could only be interpreted in one way. This will be seen in terms of Ishmael and Isaac. Speaking at the Yeshiva on Friday in front of thousands of mourners, the Yeshiva’s head rabbi framed the attack within religious terms, saying: “The murderers are the Amalek of our day, coming to remind us that Amalek has not disappeared, just changed its appearance.” As the Jewish Encyclopedia puts it, “King David waged a sacred war of extermination against the Amalekites,” and the term Amalek has been used to denounce anyone who wishes to exterminate the Jews.

In Deuteronomy 25:“Remember what Amalek did to you on the way as you came out of Egypt, 18 how he attacked you on the way when you were faint and weary, and cut off your tail, those who were lagging behind you, and he did not fear God. 19 Therefore when the Lord your God has given you rest from all your enemies around you, in the land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance to possess, you shall blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven; you shall not forget.

Rabbi Ya’akov Shapira said Friday that the attack was a direct continuation of the 1929 Hebron massacre, in which dozens of Jews were killed and the survivors fled.

Being messianic religious people, the religious Zionists are going to see this attack through the prism of messianic prophecy. Already I am hearing on religious Zionist radio stations people talking about the attack in prophetic terms, such as Isaiah 59 verse 20: And a redeemer will come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the LORD.

Settler radio talk- show hosts are interpreting this prophecy by saying that if the Jews don’t stop Hamas, the Palestinians, Hizbullah and any other Islamic fundamentalists, God will force the Jews to do it. The talk-show hosts blame Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and President Shimon Peres, and several callers into the broadcasts are unanimous in their condemnation of the Israeli government and calling on its removal.

The fact that the Foreign Ministry has already come out with a formal statement saying the attack won’t derail the talks with the Palestinian Authority will only fuel the anger of the settler population this weekend. It will be interesting to see how this plays out in the Knesset from Sunday, and the implications on the coalition. Shas will come under immense pressure to bolt the government.

At the funeral procession speeches Friday at the Yeshiva, Chief Sephardic Rabbi Shlomo Amar began his comments with the Psalm for Assaf: “They have spilled blood like water around Jerusalem.”

Many of the top leadership of the religious Zionist movement, speaking at the funerals, spoke of revenge of the blood. The fact that the Jewish students were killed in a house of God touched the most basic nerve of many Israelis, and especially of the religious Zionist public.

“God’s vengeance will come swiftly,” Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu’s secretary cried out in his rabbi’s name.

Very few people outside the religious Zionist population have even heard of Merkaz Harav, let alone know somebody who studies there. This was not an attack aimed at the wider Israeli public, but a strategic attack against a very vocal public who will be demanding action of the government. There may even be some on the fringes of the settlement movement who will want to take the law into their own hands and carry out a revenge attack, maybe even against targets in East Jerusalem, where it looks like the killer came from.

The fact that the attack was carried out in the way it was - live fire, chasing down the students and shooting them at point blank range, as well as confirming the kills - and not by a suicide bombing, will add to the sense of brutality, of the narrative of good versus evil.

  1. One must be consequent and put his actions or at least his words in accordance with his faith. For people who pretend to see themselves, no less comitted to Torah than their haredi couterpart and fellow worshipping jews, the so called national religious isralis haven’t yet deliver any answers to the corruption and continuous erosion of their goals in politic, education, religion, settelment, security etc in the frame of the jewish national state. What hapend yesterday is about to make as much change as the surrender of gush katif was about to start a civil war. This public makes up most of army’s backbone and pay a continuous tribute to hazardous security politics. How much of all this, can the religious nationalist also called settlers, spiritually handle is in my eyes the real question. Sure, their rabbis lake most of the prestige and authority of the big names in the various haredi branches, their political party has failed to grow in terms and mandates and influence above its demographic basis and never never had a minimalistic charismatic leader or ever tryed to gain some larger than sectorial appeal. Still this public and its leaders haven’t much dealed in the way one would expect from religious jews wich means in halachic terms with their situation. They certainly haven’t even tryed to at least morally grow above the shadows of meir kahana zatsal, baruch goldstein zatsal and last but not least ygal amir none of them beeing a stamped follower of their ideals. The massacre yesterday will change nothing. They are too weak in faith, too precautious in halachic decisions, too corrupted in politics and society to allow themselves to react, either in the form of vendetta on accross the street living arabs or strike in the governmental instituions, were they show a large presence, or at least riot in the streets where they live like proper haredi would. I don’t believe in psychology applied to sociology but after having been called a jewboy myself, in hebrew I would say they are yehudonim… of the state of israel.
G.od may avenge all spelled jewish blood.

  2. Any attack on Jerusalem is an attack on G-d Himself. This attack should send shock waves throughout the entire world. Jews and Gentiles who cherish the Torah and the New Testament will see this prophetically. Now more than ever we should lift up the Jewish Nation and the Jewish people all over the world. There is a war of good and evil, this is absolutely a war stemming from Issac and Ishmael. This is Isaiah 14, Satan wanting to be like the most High. Let this be a trumpet sound we do not ignore! Praying for those who suffered loss and those who are turning to G-d for their salvation in these last days!

  3. A few years ago, a religious student took an AK-47, went into
Dome on The Rock Mosque, and killed 39 Muslims there; hi
religous school was not shut down. Professor Jacob
Neusner’s book, “The Transformation of Judaism: from
philosophy to religion,” outlined a new approach to the Doc-
trines of Judaic, Christian, and Muslim. He sent out invita-
tions to the World’s leading Christian and Muslim Scholars to
come study his new discovery, and they had accepted, when
U.S.F. President Beatty Castor’s administers canceled his
program, leading to today’s conflicts. The New York Times
european correspondant had an interview with the Geman
Kaiser Whelmem, during which the Kaiser reveals German
plans for World Conquest. At the Imperial German Ambass=
ador’s request, the NYT owners, Sultzberg and Ochs, kill the
interview. Published, it would have warned the world about
Germajy’s true intentions, and the nations would have taken
steps to prevented Germany from ever obtaining position to
start its World Conquest. In the 1920’s. when their concen-
trated vigorous opposition would have prevented Adolph
Hitler from coming to power. the NYT, the Anti Defamation
League, and the ACLU did nothing, though they knew
Adolph HItler intended to kill the Jews. But they mistakenly
thought that Adolph Hitler would only kill those embaraessin
to them. Traditonal Jews, sparing Good German Cultural
Jews, like themselves, who followed the Graf-Wellhousen
Thesis, Imperial German World War Conquest Propaganda,
and rejected the Schma, Deuteronmy 6: 4-9, and even the
more limited .Deuteronmy 6: 4-5. Basically, these fools
replace Moses and Aristotle, with Emmanuel Kant’s Neo-
Platonism. Neo-Platonism is based on the Irrational
Allegorical Method, which having rejected rationality, has no
means of resolving the inevitable disputes that arise, so
must shun, until ready to launch violent surprise attacks.
Judaic, Christian, and Muslim Scholars must return to
rational philosophy, to understand their doctrines and resolve
their problems internally, and with each other. History’s main
Neo-Platonists, are Philo Judaeus of Alexandria, Egypt,
Plotinus, Augustine of Hippo, Emmanuel Swedenborg, and
his Plagarist, Emmanuel Kant, and Kant’s followers.
Emmanuel Kant was the Official Idiologist of the Nazi Party
and Nazi Germany, and the Non-Traditional Jews. Jacob
Neusner wants Judaism and its two closely related
Doctrines, Christian and Muslim, to return to their Original
Rational Doctrines, mainly to resolve their own problems,
and of course their problems with each other will become
    very minor in comparison.
